Debra Cole knows the deadly affects of breast cancer.

A cancer advocate, this nine-year breast cancer survivor and Farmerville resident has been educating her community about the deadly disease and encouraging volunteerism with the Relay For Life of Union Parish for several years.
And she recognizes that breast cancer is deadlier in African American women under the age of 55 than it is in white women of the same age group.
“Whether you are a survivor, know someone with cancer or have suffered the loss of a friend or family member to cancer, you know the disease that doesn’t discriminate and affects all of us in some sort of way,” said Cole, who is a member of the Witness Project of Northeast Louisiana. This project, an affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Race for Cure, educates African American women about prevention, treatment and the affects of breast cancer.
