Farmerville honored former mayor Willie Davis, Jr., last Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the renaming of the Farmerville Recreation Center to the Willie Davis, Jr., Recreation Center.
Davis, who served as Mayor of the Town of Farmerville for 16 years, was instrumental in the establishment of the Rec. Center during his term. The center currently houses a gym, as well as conference rooms and other recreational facilities.
“I’m just so thankful I could see this day,” said Davis, “In fact, I have to admit, I didn’t even know I had so many friends.”
Citizens from Farmerville and throughout Union Parish showed up to support the former mayor. Over 30 members of Davis’ family were also present, some having traveled from as far as Indiana and Chicago for the occasion.
Other notable figures included current Farmerville mayor Stein Baughman, Jr., and state senator Mike Walsworth, R-West Monroe, as well as state representative Hollis Downs, R-Ruston, who authored House Bill 390 authorizing the Town of Farmerville to change the Center’s name.
“The Rec. Center is an asset for our town,” said mayor Baughman, as he presented Davis with an honorary plaque, “and we should all thank Willie Davis for having the insight to realize that Farmerville needed a center like this.”
Photos and refreshments followed the ceremony, as mayor Davis celebrated with his many friends and family, all of them testament to his many years of service to the Town of Farmerville.
