Escapee Captured in Arizona
One of two inmates who escaped from the Union Parish Detention Center has been captured in Arizona.
Sheriff Dusty Gates reports that Benjamin J. Morana, 39, of Junction City, was taken into custody after police in Mesa, Arizona responded to a call about a suspicious person being allegedly involved in narcotics sales.
After he was taken into custody, Morana provided information that Thomas Kinniard Jr., who also escaped on Feb. 22, was also in the Phoenix, Arizona area.
Both men were being held at the Detention Center for the Louisiana Department of Corrections. Morana was jailed after being found guilty of aggravated incest, while Kinniard was held after pleading guilty in Morehouse Parish to burglary charges. For Kinniard, who has a long history of criminal activity, it was his third escape attempt.
According to Gates, Morana was taken into custody late Wednesday and is being held in the Scottsdale Jail. He will be go to court later this week for an extradition hearing before returning to Union Parish, where he will face charges of simple escape.
Officials with the U.S. Marshalís Office Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force and a number of Arizona law enforcement agencies are searching for Kinniard.
