Pesky plant takes root

It came to our country through Philadelphia for our nation’s centennial in 1876, intended to add beauty to private gardens.
A few years later, it appeared in New Orleans with the same intended purpose.
During the Dust Bowl and Depression periods of the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps, which provided work for many unemployed Americans, planted it throughout the South.
