Funeral services for Gay Gillum 69, of Farmervillewere held Nov. 6 at First Methodist Church. Rev. Kibbie Hatfield officiated. Burial followed at Farmerville City Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home.
Gay was born on January 23, 1940 in Farmerville, LA; and passed away after a brief illness on November 3, 2009 in Farmerville, LA
Gay Gillum will be sorely missed by her family, her church and her many, many friends. Gay was a caring and loving sister, always wanting to be a part of the solution and not the problem.
Gay returned home some 10 years ago after retiring as head of the Lab Technology Dept. at Virginia Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. After coming home she quickly committed her life to her Church and to those in need. Gay could “talk the talk”…but more importantly she could and did ”walk the walk”. Gay’s father J.D. Gillum was a tireless member of Alcholics Anonymous…Gay was a member of a little different “AA” group…Hers being “Always Available”. Her greatest joy was driving someone to Monroe for a doctor’s appointment or visiting those in Hospitals and Nursing Homes. She had a special love for her pets and simply could not say “no” when asked to care for an adandoned dog or cat. She truly asked for so little and lived her life for others. Her life goal was “not to be remembered…but to prepare for eternity…and that she did.
Special medical treatment for Gay was provided by Dr. Myron “Mike” Bailey, Dr. Barry Weinberger, Dr. William Zollinger and Dr. Steven Venters. Dara Jung and her nursing staff at Union General Hospital were so patient and kind during Gay’s brief illness. Much attention was given to Gay by her dear, dear friends, Jerry and Lynn Ramsey, Chris Turner, Lynn Baughman and Robert Allen. She appreciated so much being visited by her high school classmates. Gay’s high-school, home-room teacher continued to have a positive effect on Gay’s life.
Gay was not only a member of, but a dedicated worker, in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. She took care of the day to day operations of the Church and the Pastoral needs of her Church. She printed the bulletin each week, sang in the choir, was the Church Historian. Gay was a Eucharistic Minister, church administor, Past President of the Parish Council and served as Liaison between her Church and the Diocese in Shreveport. Gay was a Board member of Union Parish Council on Aging and avid member of En Trous Book Club.
Gay was preceded in death by her parents J.D. and Maxine Gillum and brother, Randy Gillum.
Gay is survived by her sister Ann Baughman and her brother-in-law Stein Baughman, Jr. of Farmerville; Nephews Stein Baughman III and wife Pattie of Colleyville, Texas; Jay Gillum of Concord, Calif.; Scott Gillum and wife Mindie of Martinez, Calif; Nieces Mary Ellyn Booth and husband Richard Booth of Newnan, Geor.; and Beth Baughman of West Monroe; Aunts Helen Rose Reeves of Ruston; Janelle Crow of Vernal, Miss.; and Novie Gillum of Shreveport; Uncle Emolry Gillum and wife Virginia of Jonesboro; Many great-nieces, nephews and other loving and supportive family members.
