Powerlifting is the step-child of high school sports, but that is changing.
This marks the first year that the sport was recognized and sanctioned by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association and the Farmerville boys’ and girls’ teams each finished as state runner-up in Class 3A.
This sanctioning is a giant step in the direction of becoming more than a club sport at the college level. There are eleven weightclasses and Farmerville sent eleven boys and eleven girls to the state meet.
Destiny Richter, Emily Rodriguez, Stormy Harrell, Brianna Hubbard, Kennedy Hughes, Amanda Ingles, Jessica Kirkland, Kathy Brown, Baileigh Wilson, Jacy Barron, Akila Holly, and Brittany Patrick represented the girls’ team. Isaiah Robinson, Ronnie Smith, Cazavion Joiner, Cody Kennedy, Tyler Holloway, D’AngeloButler, Zach Alford, Hayden Mock, Bobby Holly, Lee Hill, And Austyn Bullock represented the boys. At the end of the day when points were totaled, both FHS teams showed as runner-up in Class 3A.
Individual achievements on the girls’ teams had Destiny Richter, Kathy Brown, and Akila Holly as individual state champions in their weight classes. Kennedy Hughes, Emily Rodriguez, and Akila Holly made either 8 of 9 or 9 of 9 of their lift attempts.
“It was a great meet,’’ girls’ coach, Lane Welch said. “We made jumps where we were supposed to.”
Welch’s team is young, so you can look for them to be a force again next season.
On the boys’ side, Isaiah “Smokey” Robinson, Ronnie Smith, Bobby Holly, and Cody Kennedy all won first place in their weight divisions. Cody Kennedy set a bench press record at Regional’s in Pineville but failed to break his own record at State. Kennedy and Austin Bullock both plan to attend Louisiana Tech next year and continue their power lifting for Tech.
