UPHS students compete in Ag events


Union Parish High Schools Agriculture Department Competes

The UPHS Ag students competed in the Ouachita Invitational Mechanics Contest on February 20, at Ouachita Parish High School.

Anthony Foreman and Daniel Martinez took 1st place honors in Small Engine. Silvano Medrano and Jose Izaguirre also competed in this contest. Jose Hernandez and Alex Jones placed 2nd in Expert Welding, and though they didn’t place, Ricky Jones, Josh Gaspard, and Matthew Jones had a strong entry in Novice Welding.

UPHS Ag Department students then participated in the FFA District 2, Area 1 Mechanics Competition at Delta Community College, Ruston Campus, on March 5. This competition is a qualifier for the next Area competition, which is scheduled for later in March at Louisiana Tech University. Anthony Foreman and Daniel Martinez continued their team’s progress by placing 4th in Small Engine, allowing them to move forward to the area competition. Jose Hernandez and Alex Jones will join seven other teams at the area competition, with the top eight teams vying for honors at the next level. Other students who performed well in this competition but won’t progress are Silvano Medrano and Jose Izaguirre.

On March 6, UPHS hosted the Spring FFA Career Development Events at the Union Parish High School Ag Shop. Over 10 others schools came to compete in the areas of poultry evaluation, nursery/landscape, floriculture, meat evaluation and technology, milk quality and products, and veterinary science. UPHS home teams placed in the top three in two categories. The team of David Avila, Gabriel Aguilar, Summer Brizendine, Riley Jones, Da’Marquez Watson, Matthew Jones, and Jalen Johnson placed 2nd in meat evaluation and technology. Jonathan Nunez, Ryleigh Mobley, Mason Duncan, Nicholas Brummett, and Charles Landaverde placed 3rd in veterinary science.
