All La. state parks, state historic sites temporarily closed to public

Effective at 5 p.m., March 24, all buildings and overnight facilities at Louisiana State Parks are temporarily closed, as are all buildings at all state historic sites. This action is taken for the safety of staff members and the public at these sites, as they encounter the general public on a daily basis. The closure will remain in effect until April 13, and no new reservations will be accepted prior to that date.

UP schools empty and waiting

Union Parish schools sit empty for a second straight week following a government shutdown of schools across the nation due to the rapid spread of Covid-19, commonly called the coronavirus.

New UP Coroner scheduled to be sworn in April 1

Union Parish recently found itself in need of a coroner. The Coroner of a parish is a judicial officer who must grant autopsy orders, exhumation orders, order investigations of deaths, order inquests and issue certificates of fact of death, among many other innumerable duties. Union Parish found the perfect candidate in Renee Smith.

Party gifts for puppies

Eva Grace Jones (center, green shirt) is shown with her friends at her 8th birthday party. Eva Grace asked her friends to bring gifts for the animals being fostered by Union Humane Society because “she has plenty of toys and the animals need them more than she does.” She donated all the items shown and over $100 to the animals.
