Union Parish High School football picked up its fifth win of the 2020 season Friday with a 35-14 district win at home against Richwood. The Farmers are now 5-0 and 2-0 in district play. Richwood fell to 0-5.

Despite the scoring differential, it was not a pretty win for the Farmers. A plethora of penalties kept both teams at bay throughout the game. “Ultimately these guys come out here and get the job done,” said UP Head Coach Joe Spatafora. “We always have to remember it’s not who you play it’s how you play. We’ve got to keep our composure, keep our focus and make sure we continue to get better each and every week.”

UP led 21-0 at the half. Partially because of the lead and because later in the season they’ll need it, the Farmers worked on the passing game. There were several dropped balls and several overthrown balls, along with a few strong completions on the night as well. Quarterback Cole Dison was 5 of 19 on the night for 86 yards and 1 TD to Rykel Wallace. “Cole continues to get better,” Spatafora said. “You’ve got to work on it because you’re going to need it later on.”

UP’s offensive line continued its strong play. The Farmers ran the ball 43 times against Richwood for 234 yards, an average of 5.4 yards per carry. “Those guys do a good job,” Spatafora said. “There’s still a few execution points they need to work on, but they strive to get better each and every week.”

Trey Holly once again led the team’s ground attack with 18 carries for 162 yards and 3 TDs. Holly had 250 all-purpose yards on the night, adding 49 yards receiving, 27 on kickoff returns and 12 on punt returns. Holly now has 20 TDs through five games.

Senior linebacker Hayden Edwards joined the night’s scoring, scooping up a Richwood fumble and outrunning the field for a 65-yard score.
