Mrs. Corine Carter, age 96, passed away at home in El Cajon, California. She had been lovingly cared for since being diagnosed with Dementia & Alzheimer’s after the death of her dear husband of 67 years, Elmer Carter, in 2013.
Corine was a native of Farmerville, Louisiana, and her Odom and Nyegaard ancestors were first generation residents there. She graduated as salutatorian from Farmerville High in 1941 and later graduated from University of California at Northridge with an elementary school teaching degree. She loved reading and learning, and she taught elementary school, K-5 for 28 years.
Mrs. Carter worked as a riveter in Los Angeles, during WWII, helping to build planes for the war effort. She met a handsome sailor after the war and she became his beautiful bride in 1946. They raised 3 children in Reseda and Canoga Park, California. She is remembered as being a hard worker, but she also enjoyed playing fun pranks on unsuspecting family members.
Corine was raised Baptist, but was converted as a young adult, to become a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She lived her life with a deep testimony of her Savior and served in many leadership and teaching positions. She was known for her unconditional love and forgiving and loving everyone.
Corine loved fishing in the High Sierras and the Pacific Ocean, with her husband and family. Camping trips to Mammoth Lakes and Carpinteria Beach were an annual event, with years of family memories. Family history, quilting and gardening were her passions. Her grandchildren recall her yard full of lovely flowers and the sweet scent of orange blossoms in the air when visiting her home. All left with boxes of her yummy homemade “love” jam. She enjoyed making tied fleece quilts for all her grandchildren.
Corine’s parents, Aylmer Nyegaard and Irene Odom, and her dear sister, Elaine Nyegaard Jarred preceded her in death.
Her much loved, half siblings, Ann (Soderberg), Charles, Alice (Williamson) and Frederick Nyegaardsurvive her. She is survived and dearly missed by her 3 children, Johnnie, Janis (husband, Raul Franco), and Nan (husband, Greg Reuel), 14 grandchildren, 29 gr- grandchildren, 2 gr-gr grands & many nieces & nephews.
