ULM AD McDonald speaks about spring sports cancellation

Body

“We support the Sun Belt’s decision to cancel all spring sporting events and any team-related activities as well as NCAA’s immediate moratorium placed on all on- and off-campus recruiting.

“These are unprecedented times, and the impact goes well beyond intercollegiate athletics.

“Conference commissioners and athletics directors across the country have been monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) for weeks, and last Thursday, it seemed like our world got turned upside down. We went from monitoring the situation on a daily basis to hour-byhour and then literally minute-by-minute. And things will definitely change in the coming weeks. Questions are often being asked faster than well-informed responses can be formulated.

“Throughout this process, our primary focus has been on attempting to make difficult decisions that are in the best interests of all the people we serve while ensuring the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, staff, alumni and fans. With the well-being of all members of our campus community our highest priority, ULM Athletics in concert with the University’s leadership team will continue to closely monitor the situation.

“I appreciate the leadership and guidance that has been provided by both Dr. (Nick) Bruno and Sun Belt Commissioner (Keith) Gill during these uniquely challenging times.”
